 · By accident I happened upon Turner sawmills, made in New Hampshire. They run substantially cheaper than the aforementioned mills, but use tires for bandwheels. They claim this is better because it keeps the blade cooler and allows for some give going through the wood and therefore lengthening the life of the blades.

The blade will only last two to four sharpenings until it breaks. The reason for this is that microscopic cracks develop in the gullet of the blade when cutting. If you do not remove these cracks, the blade breaks. This is very simple! Read some of the articles that Tim Cook has wrote on this subject. It is explained very well by him.

 · Baron, Thanks for the comments. I did try a new blade and the first cut was still wavy, so I upped the tension from 6 half turns to 6 1/4 and it cut nice and straight. It was a combination of dull blade and tension I think. Yes, I'm cutting solely Eastern White Pine right now.

High tension makes for more stress on the bearings and the band saw run with as little tension as possible on my HD36 portable sawmill to get a straight cut. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say I put about 60 ftpounds of torque on the tightening bar (that's with grease on the threads).
